The Lodz East Asia Meeting is an annual conference for scholars interested in political, economic and social aspects of Asian affairs. After the success of the last five editions, we wish to continue the meeting as an international event. It will provide a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas between researchers from different countries. We wish for the Lodz East Asia Meeting to become a forum for both experienced academics and young scholars who always make up a significant number of the participants.

The 2017 conference will focus on the examination of power shifts in the political, economic and social landscape of the Asian continent, as well as their significance for Asian-European exchange. The Asia-Pacific region has been a place of confrontation for global and regional powers.

The rise of China can be interpreted as an opportunity for accelerating regional development, but it also creates concerns about the possibility of rebuilding the Sinic sphere of influence. Japan and ASEAN countries in particular have been searching for ways to counterbalance the China’s rising power, both through enhancing their own military potential and relying on support from the US. In addition, India’s demographic expansion or South Korea’s economic robustness can lead to further regional power shifts in the future. At the same time, the last years have witnessed dynamic domestic changes in a number of important Asian countries. These trends can influence the state of Asian-European relations. We hope that the Lodz East Asia Meeting becomes a place for an exchange of opinions on these recent developments.

The LEAM 2017 keynote speech will be delivered by Emil J. Kirchner, Jean Monnet Professor and Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Essex. Professor Kirchner is Advisory Editor and Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of European Integration, holder of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, a Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the University Association of Contemporary Studies. His research interests are mainly on EU external relations and EU-Asia security relations. He has been a visiting professor at universities in various European countries, the United States and China. His recent book publications are (co-editor) Security Relations between China and the European Union, Cambridge University Press, 2016, and The Palgrave Handbook on EU-Asia Relations, 2013.
