Nauka inspiruje – Dr Paweł Jarosiewicz

Dr Paweł Jarosiewicz stands out as an innovator in the field of water environment purification. He has patented and implemented a technology for removing phosphorus from aquatic ecosystems, for which he received, among other things, a gold medal at the prestigious Concorus Lepine innovation fair in Paris. He is the founder of the Ecohydrology Student Science Club and the administrator of @ekohydrologia, a profile that popularises knowledge . His involvement has been noticed and honoured with the Universitas Lodziensis Alumno Laude Dignissimo medal for his activity for the University of Lodz. Every day he inspires crowds of students and young scientists to take better care of our water resources.

Dr Paweł Jarosiewicz specialises in ecohydrology and biogeochemistry. He deals with processes related to the purification of the aquatic environment using Nature-based Solutions. He is involved in the implementation of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme. He actively cooperates with research centres from Italy, China, Portugal, Greece, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Brazil and Indonesia. Dr Jarosiewicz is a winner of numerous awards and honours, including the Ecological Plebiscite "Wspólna Zielona Przyszłość" [Common Green Future], organised by the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, in which he was awarded for his doctoral dissertation. The competition jury appreciated the complex nature of the doctoral dissertation, which included research on the processes responsible for the presence of pollutants in the rivers of central Poland and the patented BioKer technology for improving the quality of the water environment. He is the President of the Polish Young Professionals Network of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). He has been a technical editor in the international journal Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology since 2018. Dr Paweł Jarosiewicz is a co-author of 11 articles and two scientific textbooks.

What inspired you to become a scientist?

First of all, it was contact with inspiring scientists at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Lodz. I remember that when I handed in my bachelor's thesis, Professor Bożena Bukowska encouraged me to conduct further research with a positive and constructive review. Then, lectures given by Professor Maciej Zalewski, later the supervisor of my doctoral dissertation, showed me the purposefulness of scientific work and the mission that we should pursue towards the global society.

What impact does your work have on the surrounding reality?

I have a privilege that my area of research, ecohydrology, is focused on finding solutions to complex water and environmental problems. The technologies that I develop to improve the quality of water resources arouse interest of external environment. I work closely with entrepreneurs and local communities. I am also involved in the popularisation of science, especially through the Ecohydrology Student Science Club, which I have the pleasure of supervising.

How do you understand the term: profession of a scientist?

It is, above all, about innovation, reliability and openness. It is about striving for excellence in research but also having a positive impact on the environment. It is also a great responsibility towards society, which largely finances my work.
