"MIĘDZY DOKUMENTACJĄ A KREACJĄ" [BETWEEN DOCUMENTATION AND CREATION] is a result of a semester-long course in documentary photography for first-year students of History of Art at the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Lodz.
From theory to practice
Photography is both a set of technical concepts and a visual language used for research purposes. Due to its documentary properties, photography often serves as a medium that mediates initial contact with art. Creative freedom based on the conscious use of photographic means of expression leads to a creative act, the experience of which is crucial for understanding the language of art and defines the perspective for future art historians.
Creative process and its effects
The photographs on the exhibition display n are largely the result of personal fascinations, juxtaposed with the experience of the medium of photography as a research tool.
A passion for photography combines with an analytical perspective, serving to organise the symbols inherent in visual language.
The spontaneity of the recording is confronted with the application of artistic means appropriate to painting or the ability of creative reinterpretation – entering into a dialogue with significant and recognisable images that have a well-established status in history.
The resulting works constitute a record of the process of exploring the photographic medium, starting from the basic technical aspects that build an objectifying documentary look, through issues of subjectivisation and image manipulation, ending with an attempt to use photography as an autonomous field of art.
Combining science and art
During practical classes, students analyse the organisation of photographic images based on compositional exercises, observing reality and documenting art objects and architecture, searching for context, and reinterpreting symbols and motifs through conscious references to works known from history of art.
At the University of Lodz, we create a place for students where the teaching process is supported by practical experience. The spaces of the Bidermann’s Palace become a laboratory that expands, complements and confronts acquired knowledge with practice in the field of artistic exhibitions.
