The project focuses on analysing the accessibility of museums and African art collections for people with special needs. Particular attention will be paid to methods of multisensory interpretation of artworks, audio description, and inclusive museum practices supporting the participation of diverse audiences in culture.
Continuation of Research Conducted at the University of Lodz
The planned activities directly build on projects previously carried out at the University of Lodz, including “Przyjazne Miasto” [Friendly City] and ”Sztuka łódzka na tle sztuki europejskiej. Wykluczeni/Włączeni” [Lodz Art in the Context of European Art. Excluded/Included]. The fellowship includes research activities, lectures, and workshops devoted to the accessibility of cultural heritage.
The development of international cooperation between the University of Lodz and the Museum of African Art in Belgrade, creating new opportunities for the exchange of experience as well as joint research and educational initiatives, will also be an important element of the project.
Development of Existing Research Cooperation
The project also represents a continuation of earlier research conducted by Prof. Aneta Pawłowska in Belgrade. In April 2026, the researcher visited the Museum of African Art with the support of the Polish Institute in Belgrade, the Polish Institute of World Art Studies, and the University of Lodz. This visit enabled the establishment of cooperation with the museum and an initial exploration of issues related to the presentation and interpretation of African art collections. The project carried out under the Western Balkans–Visegrad Fellowship further develops these research interests by expanding them to include issues of accessibility, inclusivity, and multisensory interpretation of cultural heritage.
Recognition of the Research Activity of the Institute of History of Art
The awarding of the fellowship is further confirmation of the high quality of research conducted at the Institute of History of Art, University of Lodz, and its significance within the international academic community.
I am very pleased that the research activity conducted at the Institute of History of Art, University of Lodz has once again been recognised in an international grant competition. I hope that the results of the project will contribute both to the further development of research on the accessibility of culture and to the promotion of our Faculty and the University on the international stage – underlines Prof. Aneta Pawłowska.
The outcomes of the project may contribute to the development of research on the accessibility of culture and to strengthening international cooperation in the field of the protection and dissemination of cultural heritage.
