Who was Andrzej Jocz?

Andrzej Jocz graduated from the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Lodz (currently The Strzemiński Academy of Art Lodz (ASP Lodz)), Faculty of Fashion in 1966. Over the years 1967-2011 he was professionally connected with his home university. In 1992 he obtained the title of associate professor, and in 1995 the title of full professor. For many years he was also a lecturer at the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Lodz University of Technology and at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Artistry in Kalisz, and at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (since 1990).

Prof. Aneta Pawłowska, the curator of the exhibition recalls:

His works have been presented at numerous local, national and international exhibitions (Germany, Italy, Hungary, France) and individual exhibitions (e.g. in Lodz, Warsaw, Krakow and the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko). For his artistic achievements and scientific and didactic work Andrzej Jocz received numerous medals and awards, among them in 2011 Gloria Artis Medal awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Avant-garde compositions, original techniques

Andrzej Jocz is an author of avant-garde sculptural compositions in urban and outdoor spaces. In his works he used original working technology with synthetic resins (e.g., resolan), glass fibre and mineral fillers.

Large-format works by the artist constitute an inseparable element of the urban landscape of Lodz. By creating them Jocz implemented his own concept of autonomous sculpture – independent from nature, yet biological in nature. This concept can be seen in a number of works located in Lodz, including: Czółenki (1979) currently located in front of the Łódź Kaliska railway station, Widzew Dzianina (1988-1992) or Autonomizm II sculpture (1988) in Pabianice.

Welded and polychromed steel was another material used to create Prof. Jocz's works. This technique was used to create, for example, Paragraf (2008) located in front of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Lodz, the logotype of the University of Lodz Library (BUŁ) and the famous Red Stairs, located in the artist's studio in Łagiewniki near Lodz. The use of a contrasting, artificial patina in many works deepens the expression of the works.

The project is implemented as part of the scholarship of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sports in the field of visual arts. Agreement /6/nr EBOI 160150/20/A1.

A roll-up exhibition with a broader presentation of artistic oeuvre of prof. Andrzej Jocz is simultaneously presented in Stróżówka Gallery (ul. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 11)
