This Sunday, in the next instalment of the "Interference" concert series, we will hear a vocalist, composer and a sound artist. Antonina Nowacka is deeply interested in the nature of sound – particularly its impact on the nervous system and the ability of music to induce specific states of mind in both the performer and the audience.
She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in Mirosław Bałka’s studio, musicology at ISI Yogyakarta (thanks to a scholarship from the Indonesian Minister of Culture), as well as traditional Hindustani vocal techniques.
Drawing on traditional music, natural phenomena and hypnagogic states, she creates performances that combine sound, architecture and imagination. Her explorations revolve around early music – religious, ancient and operatic songs – as well as experiments with electronics and the vocal apparatus.
Following the performance, Bartosz Nowicki, a music critic, publicist and a sound researcher, will lead a conversation with the artist. From 2012 to 2018, he ran the blog 1uchem/1okiem, devoted to Polish independent music. He has published, among other things, in Polityka, Gazeta Magnetofonowa, Kwartalnik Muzyczny M/I and Czas Kultury.
The upcoming Sunday meetings with figures from the Polish and Ukrainian experimental music and sound art scenes will feature Katarina Gryvul, Paweł Kulczyński, Olga Anna Markowska and Lutto Lento.
Admission to the event is free.
The "Interference" project is organised by the Radio Kapitał Association, with the University of Lodz as a partner.
