A student podcast on Eurovision
The podcast was produced by third-year Philosophy students as part of a component of the module entitled “Sfera publiczna: teoria, krytyka, praktyka” [The Public Sphere: Theory, Critique, Practice]. The project served as a form of course completion and was the result of collaborative work by students analysing one of the most recognisable events of popular culture in Europe.
The discussion focuses on the Eurovision Song Contest – not only as a musical event but also as a social and political phenomenon that has long been present in public debate. The podcast’s authors reflect on how the contest functions in the media and social space, as well as on the meanings and emotions associated with it.
The first host of the podcast is Henrietta Siemianowicz, a third-year Philosophy student and a graduate of History at the University of Lodz. As she emphasises, she does not consider herself an expert on Eurovision; however, she has been interested in the contest for years and, prior to recording, conducted extensive research on its history and public reception. The second host is Savva Ostreiko.
Context of the teaching project
The podcast was produced as part of the module “Od utopii do sfery publicznej. Sprawiedliwość i krytyka władzy” [From Utopia to the Public Sphere. Justice and Critique of Power]. One of its components – “Sfera publiczna: teoria, krytyka, praktyka” [The Public Sphere: Theory, Critique, Practice] – focused on the analysis of contemporary cultural and social phenomena, as well as the ways in which they function in public debate.
Summary
The premiere of the podcast shortly before this year’s Eurovision final gives the project particular relevance. It is an example of combining academic reflection with the analysis of contemporary popular culture, as well as active student engagement in teaching and science popularisation activities.
