The Award Committee chaired by Arkady Rzegocki, Head of the Foreign Service, honoured three theses. The thesis by the graduate of the University of Lodz entitled "Relacje pomiędzy Polską a Koreą Północną po 1989 roku" [Relations between Poland and North Korea after 1989], written under the supervision of dr hab. Radosław Bania, UL Professor, is one of them.  At the same time, the Committee decided that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree awards were not awarded.

Poland and North Korea – relations after 1989

The doctoral student analysed Polish-North Korean relations after 1989 in terms of political and economic relations, and how they have changed over the years. She also focused on the functioning of the Polish Mission to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, which has been operating on the Korean Peninsula since 1953.

Due to the activity of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) related to its nuclear programme, Poland's international activity was discussed, including non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council and involvement in supranational initiatives related to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and disarmament.

– adds Natalia Matiaszczyk.

The thesis also includes an analysis of Polish humanitarian and development aid for North Korea, its most important projects, goals and tasks.

Interest in Polish foreign policy

The competition of the Minister of Foreign Affairs has been organised annually since 1989. Its aim is to arouse interest in Polish foreign policy in the academic community, as well as to draw students' attention to particularly important issues regarding Poland's place on the international stage and its foreign policy.
