UniLodz open to future students

The first part of the event will take the form of an open day addressed to high school students from Łódź and the region, including classes with Ukrainian as the language of instruction. The meeting aims to present the university’s educational offer and showcase opportunities for academic development in Poland. The event will begin with a presentation entitled “Słowiańskie DNA: ukraińska opowieść między mitologią a popkulturą” [Slavic DNA: A Ukrainian Story Between Mythology and Pop Culture] prepared by Dr Ełona Curkan-Dróżka (Institute of East European Studies, University of Lodz) and mgr Piotr Baleja (Doctoral School of Humanities, University of Lodz).

In the next part of the open day, students themselves will share what it is like to study at the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz, in a session entitled “Nasze doświadczenia – Twoje możliwości. Nasza historia bez ściemy” [Our Experience – Your Opportunities. Our Story Without Filters].

The second, cultural part of the Ukrainian Culture Day will feature a concert by the “Namysto” choir – a Ukrainian ensemble based in Łódź, as well as an exhibition of works by Oleksandra Korniiets from the Strzeminski Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. The event will be open to all interested participants, and admission will be free of charge.

Language as a pillar of multiculturalism

Particular emphasis will be placed on study programmes attractive to young people from Ukraine. A new programme of studies aimed at those interested in the culture of Eastern Europe will be introduced. Starting from the academic year 2026/2027, the Institute of East European Studies will offer courses related to Ukrainian language, literature and culture.

Students will also learn about other programmes offered by the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz, including Polish Studies with English, designed with international students in mind.

A local initiative in a global context

The organisation of Ukrainian Culture Day at the University of Lodz is a response to an invitation to participate in Ukrainian Week – an international initiative aimed at promoting Ukrainian studies and Ukrainian culture worldwide. The Łódź edition of the project demonstrates how global ideas can be implemented locally, through activities addressed to specific communities and tailored to their needs and social context.

The event, which will take place at the Faculty of Philology building (Pomorska 171/179), is organised by the Institute of East European Studies, University of Lodz, and the Department of Applied and Cultural Linguistics at the Institute of Polish Philology and Logopaedics, University of Lodz.
