World Theatre Day, observed annually on 27 March, is an opportunity to remember outstanding figures of the stage. The Powszechny Theatre in Łódź and the University of Lodz are proposing a unique event on this day – "The Biedermanns. Homecoming," associated with the history of the city.

A scene from the play The Biedermanns with actors from the Powszechny Theatre

During the evening, starting at 5 p.m., at the palace at Franciszkańska 1/5, actors from the Powszechny Theatre will present a tableau vivant – an art installation that will loop back to the last cup of tea drunk by Bruno Biedermann's family in their home, just before making the most difficult decision of their lives. Their fates are tragically intertwined with the history of Łódź.

The play has won numerous awards (including at the National Competition for the Staging of Polish Contemporary Art and the "Reality Presented" Festival of Contemporary Drama in Zabrze) and has been hailed by critics as the best Łódź play of recent years.

In the actors' staging, this time the action takes place at the palace's Fireplace Hall, filled with beautiful wooden ornamentation. From here, a staircase with carved balustrades and ornaments leads to the first floor, and on the mezzanine floor, you can admire the impressive stained-glass window "Goddess Flora." This is just a foretaste of what awaits in the long corridor and around the bend.

We encourage you to explore the extensive Biedermann’s house – the dining room, bedroom, study combined with the library and rooms housing documents relating to the beginnings of the University of Lodz, its employees, and distinguished alumni.

The palace halls will be open to the public from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All rooms will be marked, and directions for visiting will be provided.

Admission to the performance and palace tours is free. Flash photography will be available during the event, which may not be recommended for those with light sensitivity.

The University of Lodz manages several historic villas and palaces in the city. Most of them have been restored and delight passersby with their architectural details. These historic buildings serve administrative and research functions.

The Alfred Biedermann's Palace, which is palace located at the intersection of Północna and Franciszkańska Streets, is the most impressive one. The building is a detached palace with modernist features, surrounded by a vast park with a preserved historic coach house converted into an art gallery. Built between 1910 and 1912, the palace consists of two rectangular volumes with a connecting passage. The façade is enlivened by two symmetrically placed semicircular projections and large rectangular windows.

The post-industrial heritage is made available to residents on many occasions, such as the Łódź Festival, the Night of Museums, and various cultural events (Fotofestival, the "Music at Biedermann's" concert series).
