Prof. Krzysztof Konecki przewodniczącym PTS

Professor Krzysztof Konecki from the University of Lodz has been appointed Chairman of the Polish Sociological Association (Polskie Towarzystwo Socjologiczne) for the next term (until 2023). At the General Assembly of the Association, the Professor underlined that he would continue to act for the benefit of the sociological community while continuing the policy of the Polish Sociological Association, as well as speaking out on public issues. Congratulations!

Professor K. Konecki thanked for the trust shown and added:

We speak out also on public matters.  In such cases, we apply a policy of moderation, as understood by Berger and Zijderveld. A policy of moderation, but without relativism, as not everything is allowed, but also without fundamentalism in defence of some absolute rights.  We always defend human’s dignity, regardless of religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Our statements and speeches on behalf of PSA, formulated by the General Board, are empathic and respect the perspective of the other. As an organisation we represent civil society, we are a part of it and as long as we can, we will defend human’s dignity. Therefore, I advocate avoiding hate speech in our reactions. However, we need to react when human dignity is threatened or attacked. And we will continue to listen to the grassroots voices and react to the social and political situation when it comes to the issues important for our environment, but also for the country and democratic freedoms.

The Polish Sociological Association is a scientific and professional organisation of Polish sociologists. It operates based on the Law on Associations of 1989 and the Statute of 1958 as amended. The statutory goals of PAS include support for the development of sociology, dissemination of sociological knowledge, shaping professional ethics of sociologists and representing members of the Polish Sociological Association in terms of their scientific and professional activities (§ 9). Membership of the Association is open to persons who have graduated in sociology or related studies, as well as to other persons who have achievements in sociology.  The current Polish Sociological Association was founded in 1957; its establishment was an important fact in the revival of sociology after the fall of Stalinism.
