Prof. Maria Bryszewska przedstawicielką Polski w programie COST

Professor Maria Bryszewska from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, UL has been nominated to be a representative of Poland in COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). It is an organization that initiates and funds prestigious research networks in all scientific and technical disciplines. The Professor will take the position of a member of Scientific Committee of the programme for a three-year term of office for the years: 2021-2024.

What is COST programme?

COST is a programme financed by the European Union. It makes it possible for scientists to form interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond it. It provides funds for organization of conferences, meetings, trainings, short scientific exchanges and other actions within a broad spectrum of scientific topics. COST supports ventures on a specific topic, conducted as part of the so-called COST Actions.

The programme is funded under the Horizon 2020 budget. COST supplements actions of the EU framework programmes by creating a bridge between the research and industrial communities of different countries. It also increases mobility of researchers from all over Europe and fosters creation of scientific excellence.

Nominating prof. M. Bryszewska to be a member of Scientific Committee of COST is a result of her many years involvement in actions carried out as part of the programme, starting from the role of a delegate in the Management Committee (MC Member) of TD0802 action, realized over the years 2009-2013 through an active research work carried out in international cooperation. Professor Bryszewska is a true ambassador of this programme, both in the region of Lodz as well as throughout Poland.

Nomination to be a representative of Poland for prof. Maria Bryszewska is a confirmation of the highest, world-class level of experimental sciences conducted at the University of Lodz.

More about prof. Maria Bryszewska

Scientific interests of prof. M. Bryszewska focus on biomedical properties of nanoparticles –dendrimers, gold and silver nanoparticles – as well as a possibility of their use as drug and gene carriers in targeted therapy, i.e., in the area of nanoscience, which is one of the national priorities.

Professor Bryszewska is a co-author of thirty articles published mainly in journals from JCR list, fourteen chapters in English-language books and two books in English concerning dendrimers properties.

The Professor has been awarded for her scientific achievements by the Rector of the University of Lodz as well as by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, UL many times. She is also a winner of three Rector’s Awards for outstanding research achievements awarded to the best publishing employees of the University of Lodz in the field of Life Sciences.

Conducting modern scientific research by prof. M. Bryszewska in cooperation with the leading centres of nanoparticles research in Poland and abroad is possible thanks to the obtained grants, which she actively applies for together with her team. Their value, apart from expanding knowledge, is also implementation value which can be evidenced by patent applications and granted patents.

In the Department of General Biophysics, UL headed by the Professor, almost 30 research projects are realized, including those in which she plays the role of a coordinator, e.g.,:

1. Beethoven Life 1, Polsko-Niemiecki bilateralny projekct, “Novel polymeric nanoparticles for pulmonary nucleic acid therapy - synthesis, toxicological analysis and biological/therapeutic assessment”, NP-Hale, 2020-2023

2. M-Era.NET “Nanoparticle Transfer Through Endothelial Barrier” NanoTENDO, 2019–2022

3. NAWA IAP (International Academic Partnership) “Strengthening and spreading international partnership activities of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection for interdisciplinary research and innovation of the University of Lodz, EUROPARTNER”, 2018–2021

University of Lodz is one of the biggest universities in Poland. Its mission is to educate top-class scientists and specialists in numerous fields of humanities, social sciences, natural and exact sciences as well as health sciences. UniLodz cooperates with business, both at the staff level by providing qualified employees as well as at the scientific level, by offering its know-how to enterprises from various areas of economy. University of Lodz is an academic institution open to the world – the number of its international students is constantly growing, while its Polish students, thanks to Exchange programmes, get to know Europe, Asia and travel overseas. The University is a part of Lodz, it operates for and with the community of Lodz by getting involved in many socio-cultural projects.
