Wet Monday – Water under the Microscope of UniLodz Researchers

What would the world be without water? Probably the same as UniLodz without its community. That's why, on Wet Monday, we remind you that water is important and our scientists are studying it in many ways!

Water has many names. The UniLodz researchers help us understand them all year round!

Adam Mickiewicz, in his poem "By the Great and Clear Water," wrote that "... and the water, ever pure, stands vast and clear " and in this water there are amphibians whose songs encourage visitors to visit Łódź's reservoirs.
What's hidden behind this song? Jarosław Brodecki from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz, revealed during his lecture entitled "Śpiew łódzkiego stawu" [The Song of the Łódź Pond] that the nocturnal concert of amphibians is not a random noise but a precise communication system, dependent on the season, temperature, humidity and structure of the water body.

In his lecture, he also highlights the fact that amphibians are exceptionally sensitive indicators of environmental health. Their presence, or sudden disappearance, can reveal much about, among other things, water quality.

You can listen to the entire lecture on the “Science Inspires” channel on YouTube.

We're drifting back thousands of years... or how water shapes the world

Sea levels have never been constant. For thousands of years, their fluctuations have shaped landscapes, migrations and the development of civilisations, as discussed during the lecture “Jak woda kształtuje świat? O klimacie, migracjach i przetrwaniu” [How Does Water Shape the World? On Climate, Migration and Survival] by Prof. Edyta Roszko from the Christian Michelsen Institute in Bergen, a VIP Alumnus of the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Lodz, discussed this topic.

How have rising and falling sea levels shaped the fate of civilisations? Why are some Pacific islands disappearing from the world map today? And what can the modern world learn from sailors who lived thousands of years ago? You can find the answers to these questions while watching a lecture on the “Science Inspires” YouTube channel.

Science Inspires

“Science Inspires” is an initiative aimed at showcasing and promoting science and its impact on society. We want to inspire and encourage people to take an interest in science by highlighting inspiring individuals, research and initiatives that have a significant impact on the world around us.

Our goal is to spark curiosity and interest in science, as well as to highlight its importance for society and the advancement of civilisation.
