This year, we're focusing on "Conscious Consumption". We approach it as a knowledge-based approach that allows us to make decisions that take into account their impact on the environment, economy and society. Every product is not only about price but also resource consumption, emissions and human labour – we show how to understand and apply these relationships in practice.

When?

The culmination of World Earth Day celebrations at the University of Lodz will be held on 21 April 2026 at the Biedermann’s Palace. We will be gathering in the University of Lodz's faculty spaces between 20 and 22 April. Activities will include lectures, workshops and actions promoting science and environmental awareness.

We create a space for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between researchers, students and those applying knowledge in practice. Our goal is not only to popularise knowledge but also to support more responsible choices in everyday life.

We raise environmental awareness by highlighting issues such as air and water pollution, climate change and the overproduction of plastic, as well as the role of education and science popularisation in pro-environmental activities.

You can hear about it all, among other things, during a series of lectures and presentations that will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. (21 April of the current year):

• "Wielkie przyspieszenie i inwazja plastiku, czyli o tym, dlaczego recycling nie uratuje świata" [The great acceleration and invasion of plastic or why recycling won't save the world] (Dr Marcin Szymański, Faculty of Philosophy and History)
• "Zły klimat dla oceanów: jak podgrzaliśmy błękitną planetę" [Bad climate for the oceans: How we heated up the plue planet] (Prof. Krzysztof Pabis, Vice-Rector of the University of Lodz for Popularisation of Science and Education)
• "Edukacja zdrowotna jako proces przygotowujący do świadomej konsumpcji" [Health education as a process of preparation for conscious consumption] (Prof. Alina Wróbel, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences)
• "Jak komunikować naukę by ją odpowiedzialnie konsumować" [How to communicate science so that it can be consumed responsibly] (Mikołaj Janic the University of Lodz Doctoral School of Social Sciences, Agnieszka Kliks-Pudlik PAP)
   

We inspire action by showing how to prepare natural cosmetics from plants, obtain their extracts and hydrolate, and the power of essential oils for our health and well-being. Together, we will use fabric scraps to create things like bookmarks and reusable bags from disposable shopping bags.

This, among other things, the subject of a series of workshops and scientific demonstrations prepared by the University of Lodz research groups is. You can participate in them from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on 21 April:

• Cosmetic Chemistry Student Science Club: "Poczuj chemię do kosmetyków" [Feel the chemistry with cosmetics ]/ "Moc Roślin Zamknięta w Kropli, czyli co drzemie w naturze" [The power of plants enclosed in a drop, or what lies dormant in nature] / "Zero Waste Beauty Lab, czyli kosmetyki od kuchni" [Zero Waste Beauty Lab, or cosmetics from the inside]/ "Skóra pod Lupą – odkryj czego potrzebuje Twoja cera" [Skin under the microscope – Discover what your skin needs]
• EDU-IMPULS Student Science Club: "Shhhyjemy zakładki"[We saw bookmarks] /"Nie wyrzucaj, wyszydełkuj!" [Don't throw it away, crochet it!] /"Ekologiczne 5 sekund" [Ecological 5 seconds]
• Acoto Student Science Club: "Drugie życie śmieci" [A second life for trash]
   

The event will conclude with a panel discussion entitled "Dzień Ziemi powinniśmy świętować codziennie" [We should celebrate Earth Day every day], led by representatives of SPATIUM and PARADYGMAT Student science Clubs under the supervision of Prof. Jakub Kronenberg (Faculty of Economics and Sociology) with the participation of invited guests, climate activists Dominika Lasota (East Initiative and Fridays for Future) and Elżbieta Lemańska-Błażowska (Parents for Climate).
