Dr. hab. Iwona Wagner, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz (Department of UNESCO Chair on Ecohydrology and Applied Ecology) has been invited to prepare a part of the report on the importance of blue-green infrastructure (BZI) for national security.
The researcher underlines that blue-green infrastructure – in other words, a well-functioning natural system – is crucial for mitigating extreme weather events, increasing water retention, and – in the long term – maintaining our country's food security. Consciously shaping this infrastructure, including protecting ecosystems and implementing the provisions of the NRL – the Regulation on the Restoration of Natural Resources – should be a priority in spatial planning at all levels. Integrating spatial planning with river basin management is essential – such action can support the protection and restoration of water resources.
The quality of nature is not only our national asset but also a matter of national security. Our country's blue-green infrastructure should be treated as critical infrastructure.
