Lodz as a Host of International Debate on the Future of Higher Education in Europe. "Joint and Double Programmes in Europe" Conference

For two days in November, Lodz will become the European capital for discussions on joint and double degree programmes, which allow students to earn a single diploma recognised in several countries simultaneously. This solution could transform the way students study across the European Union in the coming years, significantly impacting the labour market, youth mobility and university competitiveness.

The Lodz University of Technology and the Foundation for the Development of the Education System are organising an international conference in Lodz, "Joint and Double Programmes in Europe" on 26-27 November 2025. The conference will be devoted to the future of higher education, joint and double programmes, and the challenges facing European education. The event will bring together representatives from 17 countries, the European Commission, accreditation institutions, embassies, universities and organisations responsible for shaping education policy in Europe.

European higher education has been undergoing a dynamic transformation in recent years. The Bologna Process and programmes such as Erasmus+ have transformed the academic environment, supporting student and staff mobility and harmonising education systems. Flexible learning paths, micro-credentials, recognition of qualifications, as well as student and staff mobility are gaining increasing importance. Joint and double degree programmes are tools that open doors to careers across Europe, increase university competitiveness and respond to labour market needs. At the same time, they require cooperation between countries regarding programmes, legal regulations, recognition of qualifications and the quality of education.

The "Joint and Double Programmes in Europe" conference has been prepared in cooperation with institutions from France, Germany and Spain – the three countries with the largest number of European universities and leading roles in the development of joint degree programmes. Representatives of, among other things, the following institutions have confirmed their participation in the event:

  • the European Commission,
  • the embassies of partner countries,
  • the Polish and French governments,
  • accreditation institutions from Poland, Germany, and France, EQAR (European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education),
  • the Academic Cooperation Association (a dynamic think tank in the field of international higher education cooperation, bringing together 23 European organisations),
  • universities and institutions, among other things, from Italy, Belgium, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Germany and France.

The conference is a continuation of activities carried out under the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, including work on the Common European Diploma, an initiative that could significantly change the way we study and recognise qualifications across the EU in the coming years. Poland and its universities are increasingly making their presence felt in the European education debate, contributing to the development of solutions that could become standard in the coming years.

As part of the conference the Co-Create to Educate: International Collaboration Award, an international competition recognising the most inspiring, innovative and creative educational initiatives developed in international cooperation is held.

The best projects will be presented during the conference and evaluated by an international jury of experts. The competition aims not only to recognise good practices but also to promote international cooperation in higher education and inspire universities and institutions to create innovative, engaging educational projects.

Thanks to the commitment of the Lodz University of Technology, the city is becoming a forum for discussions about how universities can truly influence students' futures and the development of the labour market. The conference will demonstrate that joint and double programmes offer not only prestige but also specific tools that open doors to careers across Europe, including for students from Poland.

The event is accompanied by the publication "Joint and Double Programmes in Europe," prepared by the Foundation for the Development of the Education System in cooperation with experts from Poland and abroad. It contains analyses, best practices and recommendations regarding joint and double programmes in Europe. We encourage you to read it. It deepens the conference's themes and can be a valuable source of knowledge for universities and educational institutions. The publication will be available on the event website on the day of the conference.
