First Aid and AED

Everyone Can Help

First aid consists of actions taken until the arrival of the emergency medical services.

You do not need to be a doctor or a paramedic to assist a person whose life or health is in immediate danger.

When providing first aid, always ensure your own safety first.

Ensure Safety

Before approaching an injured person:

  • make sure the scene is safe;
  • check whether there are any hazards, such as fire, electric shock, chemical spills, or an aggressive individual;
  • if you cannot approach safely, call for help from a safe location.

Call for Help

If there is a threat to life or health: Call 112

On University of Lodz premises, you may also notify:

the University of Lodz Intervention Patrol: +48 780 701 424

When reporting an incident, provide:

  • the location of the incident;
  • what has happened;
  • the number of injured persons;
  • your telephone number.

Do not hang up first.

Check the Condition of the Injured Person

  • Check whether the person is responsive.
  • Open the airway.
  • Assess breathing (for no more than 10 seconds).

If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally: begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Perform CPR

Compress the centre of the chest:

  • depth: approximately 5-6 cm;
  • rate: 100-120 compressions per minute.

If you are trained to provide rescue breaths: 30 compressions : 2 breaths

If you do not provide rescue breaths: perform chest compressions only.

Do not stop until the emergency services arrive or the injured person shows signs of life.

Use an AED

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be used by anyone, including individuals without medical training.

The device:

  • provides voice instructions;
  • guides the user step by step.

If an AED is available:

  1. switch on the device;
  2. apply the pads according to the instructions;
  3. follow the voice prompts;
  4. after analysis or delivery of a shock, immediately resume CPR.

Where Can You Find an AED?

AEDs are available in selected University of Lodz buildings.
