Consumers want to make informed, pro-ecological choices, but they are increasingly falling victim to unfair marketing practices. Greenwashing undermines not only trust in specific companies but also the entire concept of sustainable consumption. Our project aims to answer the question of whether EU and national law is keeping pace with these challenges – and what can be done to protect consumers from false promises of environmental friendliness more effectively
– says Prof. dr hab. Monika Namysłowska.

About the project

Greenwashing – misleading consumers through unsubstantiated claims about the environmental performance of products and services – poses a growing regulatory challenge in the era of ecological and digital transformation. This phenomenon undermines consumer trust, distorts market competition and weakens the effectiveness of EU climate policies.

The GRETA project involves a comprehensive legal analysis of greenwashing regulations at the EU level and in Poland and the Czech Republic. Researchers will assess the implementation and enforcement of consumer protection regulations, identify legal gaps and institutional barriers, and compare enforcement models in both countries. Recommendations that will allow to curb greenwashing and increase the transparency of environmental communication will constitute the project result.

The research results can support legislators, consumer protection authorities and entrepreneurs, contributing to the development of a more transparent and sustainable market in the European Union.
