The University of Lodz and the City Library in Lodz have been working together for a long time on various initiatives.

So far, we have carried out several joint activities, including: the premiere of an experimental artistic radio with the participation of Dr Natalia Kowalska-Elkader (Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz) and the artist FOQL  (visit the project website). In the near future, we plan to cover three main areas of activity: popularisation of science, art&science and joint cultural projects. In addition to lectures popularising the activities and effects of the work of our scientists, we also plan, among other things, discussions, workshops expanding knowledge and developing competences among the community of Lodz

– says Jolanta Sławińska-Ryszka from the Communications and PR Centre at the University of Lodz

We are starting with the popularisation of science – as part of the "Science Inspires" project (visit the project website) Prof. Piotr Chomczyński agreed to tell us more about the topic of organised crime in Latin America that he has been dealing with

– explains the co-originator of the "Science Inspires" initiative, Michał Gruda from the Communications and PR Centre at the University of Lodz.

"Science Inspires" is an undertaking that presents and promotes science and its impact on society. The project participants have the ambition to inspire and encourage interest in science by providing interesting information, organising attractive educational events and meetings with people of science. "Science Inspires" strives to create an environment in which science becomes accessible and fascinating to everyone, regardless of age or education level.

As part of the project, we present research results and activities that have a significant impact on the surrounding reality. We want to disseminate knowledge in an accessible and interesting way. Scientific research is not an end in itself. Its results should be shared with a wider audience, and to do so you need a tailored message

– he adds.

We would like to familiarise the audience not only with the topic of organised crime in Latin America, but also with the issue of conducting qualitative research in this area. During the meeting, we will discuss issues related to the recruitment of young people to drug cartels, we will talk about how large criminal organisations operate as well as the problem of conducting field research in free and isolated conditions

– explains Prof. Piotr Chomczyński.

Why is the issue of organised crime in distant Latin America important to us in Poland? I hope this will become clear during the meeting

– concludes the researcher.

More information about Piotr Chomczyński's research can be found in one of the articles published as part of the "Science Inspires" series (go to the article).

The University of Lodz and the City Library in Lodz cooperate thanks to the joint initiative of their teams. Signing the agreement is an important step that is in line with our university's strategy of close cooperation with the local environment.
