Sejmowa Komisja ds. Cyfryzacji, Innowacyjności i Nowych Technologii na UŁ

The first external meeting of the Digitization, Innovation and Modern Technologies Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland was held at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Lodz on 19 March 2024. Its opening was attended by, among others: Dr hab. Monika Bogucka-Felczak, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration, Member of Parliament of the Republic of Poland, Bartłomiej Pejo (President of the Committee), Member of Parliament of the Republic of Poland, Grzegorz Napieralski (Vice-President of the Committee), Vice-President of the City of Lodz, Adam Wieczorek.

The meeting was also attended by MPs, scientists from the University of Lodz and representatives of other institutions. The main topic of the meeting was the social aspects of the artificial intelligence development.

Dr hab. Krzysztof Stefański, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, Head of the AI Work Team at the University of Lodz, talked about the use of robots in various fields, such as logistics, insurance sales, home design, medicine and law. Dr hab. Sylwia Wojtczak, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz (the University of Lodz Faculty of Law and Administration) raised the issue of the pace of technological changes and the constant adaptation of legislation to them, while Dr hab. Marlena Sakowska-Baryła, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz (the University of Lodz Faculty of Law and Administration) focused on the protection of personal data in the context of the artificial intelligence development. In the part devoted to expert presentations, Dr Dominika Kaczorowska-Spychalska from the Faculty of Management of the University of Lodz, Head of the Centre for Intelligent Technologies of the University of Lodz, discussed the issue of collaborative education between humans and AI.

During the discussion, the following topics were discussed:

  • the impact of artificial intelligence on the labour market and the potential disappearance of jobs for less experienced people,
  • challenges related to the regulation of artificial intelligence and the time-consuming nature of the legislative process,
  • protecting personal data in AI systems and applying old examples to AI training,
  • collaborative education between humans and AI in higher education,
  • AI policy in Poland and AI implementation in other countries,
  • possibility of using artificial intelligence to tackle discrimination.

The organisation of the first external meeting of the Committee at the faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Lodz was possible thanks to many years of cooperation between the MPs and the AI Work Team. The event yet again confirms that the University of Lodz is perceived as a leading scientific institution in Poland dealing with social and legal aspects of the artificial intelligence development.
