The work of Dr Agata Zysiak, a sociologist from the University of Lodz is a perfect example of this. She has moved to Austria, where she continues her research at the University of Vienna. Today, her name is among the winners of the latest ERC Starting Grant competition – the UniLodz researcher's project received funding of €1.5 million! We are proud that our scientists are achieving tremendous success, regardless of where they are pursuing their projects! Congratulations!
Social mobility – discover the award-winning project by Dr Agata Zysiak!
The ERC Starting Grant is awarded by the European Research Council to young and ambitious scientists whose research demonstrates the potential for pioneering discoveries – it is within this grant that Dr Agata Zysiak will research social mobility, i.e. changes in social positions in society in Eastern European socialist countries after 1945.
As part of the CLASS-UP Upward Social Mobility under Socialism in Eastern Europe 1945-1989 project Dr Agata Zysiak will examine how social mobility was defined, understood and experienced under socialism, focusing not only on measurable indicators but also on the cultural, political and social meanings attributed to mobility. Science knows no borders. We are delighted that our researchers can be a part of the international research community and that their projects are awarded some of the most prestigious research grants in Europe!
We popularise the stories of Lodz in the world – Dr Agata Zysiak inspires
UniLodz is a place where you can freely develop your passions and skills. We are a leader in science popularisation. Dr Agata Zysiak is dedicated to promoting the history of Lodz worldwide – both through her academic work and locally – through the Topography Association.
Dr Agata Zysiak delivered a lecture entitled "Uniwersytet dla robotniczej Łodzi" in October 2024 at the Film Museum in Lodz. During the lecture she spoke about the fever of post-war reconstruction, academic visions and government reforms as well as the first generation of students. The lecture can be viewed on our YouTube channel "Science Inspires."
We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Agata Zysiak, whose success proves that science is the most universal language, capable of connecting diverse places on the map into one shared path to development!
Dr Agata Zysiak is a professional historical sociologist. She is the author of the award-winning book on socialist universities and post-war social advancement, ‘Punkty za pochodzenie’ [Points for Origin, 2016], and a co-author of several books inspired by and researched in Lodz. Science thrives best where the experiences of different academic environments come together, which is why the researcher works at the University of Lodz and the University of Vienna on a daily basis.
