Dr Elena Varotto “Anthropology in Action. A Set of Practical Examples from Southern Italy”
The lecture will focus on the crucial role of forensic anthropology in modern forensic investigations, illustrating how skeletal analysis, trauma interpretation and taphonomic reconstruction contribute to solving complex legal cases and uncovering the truth behind human remains.
Elena Varotto, a PhD degree holder in Archaeology (subdiscipline: paleopathology and paleoradiology), is a researcher at Flinders University (Australia). Her research covers various areas of paleopathology and she also serves as a forensic anthropologist (technical consultant) for the Public Prosecution Service.

Prof. Francesco M. Galassi “Paleopathology of Pandemics. Ancient Lessons for Modern Anthropology and Medicine”.
The lecture examines how the study of ancient diseases and mass deaths can shed light on the origins, evolution and social impacts of pandemics. By integrating archaeological, anthropological and biomedical evidence, it reveals how ancient epidemics shaped human biology and behaviour, offering valuable insights for contemporary public health and medicine.
Francesco Maria Galassi, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Archaeology (subdiscipline: paleopathology), is a Professor at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Lodz. He specialises in the study of antiquity and the history of disease evolution using a multidisciplinary approach.
