Rodzicu poznaj swoje prawa

In connection with the Science Hub project of the University of Lodz undertaken in cooperation with the Administrative Centre for Foster Care (CAPZ) in Lodz, students of the Faculty of Education Sciences will create a mini-guide "Parent, know your rights" to help parents with incomplete parental authority understand their rights and obligations towards their children. The project supervisor is Dr Izabela Kamińska-Jatczak from the Department of Social Pedagogy and Social Rehabilitation.

The idea for the project

The idea for the project was born during a debate with representatives of institutions working with families in multi-problem situations, triggered by an exhibition of photovoices of socially disadvantaged parents, which took place at the Urban Activity Factory on 20 February 2023. About the meeting.

During the debate, a number of ideas were raised related to the introduction of solutions to improve the support offered to parents. One of them was the idea of creating a handbook to clarify legal provisions and court procedures. CAPZ representatives were present at the event, picked up on the idea and decided to collaborate with each other in this regard. Thanks to the social impact of the event, we also gained a sponsor for our activities – the FIDEES Foundation for Social Ideas – which will make it possible to print the handbook and put it on the website with open access.

"I was encouraged to participate in the 'Parent, know your rights' project by the vision of creating a tool to help parents in a difficult situation to know their rights and responsibilities towards their children." - comments Aneta Grober, social pedagogy student and the member of the project team.

Project implementation

The students of the Faculty of Education Sciences carrying out the project have completed research in the community of parents with limited parental authority. They have conducted questionnaire interviews among CAPZ clients. Expert interviews are currently being conducted with lawyers, judges, legal counsels, family probation officers to gather information that is a real support for parents.

Sandra Chojnacka, a student of social pedagogy and the member of the project team, comments on the status of the project:

"We are in the process of implementing the project, 'Parent, Know Your Rights'. In September, we completed research with parents in the reintegration process, as well as with those who have already regained their children, but are still under assistantship. At the moment, we are conducting expert interviews with specialists in family and guardianship law.  Conducting research is an important part of the project's implementation and looking at what is important in creating informative support for parents in the form of a handbook, as well as a workshop, which we plan to conduct in February 2024."

The 'Parent Know Your Rights' project is being positively received by representatives of the legal community. As mentioned, we are currently conducting expert interviews to expand our legal knowledge allowing for the creation of professional information support in this area.
