The University of Lodz has been a meeting place for people who believe that knowledge is the first step to freedom for over 80 years.
We have always created a space where students, doctoral students and those focused on research, teaching or administrative work learn about the world together – with curiosity, responsibility and respect for one another.
Our university was established on 24 May 1945, shortly after the end of the war, but its roots go back further – including to the Łódź branch of the Free Polish University (1928), the Institute of Teacher Education and the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences.

The University of Lodz is a constantly evolving community. Although relatively young, we are among the largest universities in Poland. Together, we embrace new challenges, remaining open to cooperation, dialogue and continuous development. We are united by the belief that a university should respond to the changing needs of the world and the people who shape it.
The University of Lodz is a dynamically changing community where people are valued most. We approach the challenges of the modern world boldly and responsibly. We create a space where research is done by and for people – this is what defines us as a #HumaneUniversity.
At UniLodz, we believe that people are more important than processes. That is why we operate based on relationships, cooperation and openness. We respect diversity and build an inclusive academic environment where students, doctoral students and employees can develop their potential. We are a university co-created by the community – both those who are with us now and those who were a part of it in the past. We are #teamUniLodz.

Prof. Rafał Matera

I have held the position of the Rector of the University of Lodz, entrusted to me by the University community through election, since 1 September 2024. I take my responsibilities and matters concerning other people very seriously, while approaching myself with a greater sense of distance. This balance allows me to remain optimistic and maintain good relations with the world. It also helps that I am fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic people.
Before being elected Rector, for eight years (two terms, from 2016 to 2024), I served as Dean, managing the work of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz where there are over 500 academic and administrative employees and 5,000 students.
Before working as a dean, I coordinated mobility programmes at the faculty. I also worked at a private university, as part of British validated studies. Therefore, I know the strengths and weaknesses of public universities when compared to non-public teaching and scientific institutions. My vision is that of a Humane University – one that does not always need to be first, but should always, above all, care for those who work and study here.
UNDERSTANDING OTHER DISCIPLINES
I understand the humanities, I practice Social Sciences (my research interests such as economics, sociology, international relations prove this), and I highly value Exact and Natural Sciences (I have scientific contacts with doctors and biologists). The Faculty of Economics and Sociology, which I headed, is interdisciplinary in nature – it employs people who carry out research in the field of economics and finance, sociological sciences, socio-economic geography and spatial management, management and quality sciences, legal sciences, but also physical sciences, computer science, mathematics and health sciences.
COOPERATION
To me, building relationships is of key importance. As part of two dean's boards I had an opportunity to work with fantastic people. Also at my alma mater, Department of History of Economics, I had excellent contact with the entire team. Half of my scientific publications were co-written (I shared scientific work with a dozen or so researchers). I have supervised four doctoral students, and over 100 male and female students have written their theses under my supervision. Several of them have been distinguished in various competitions.
LIFE OUTSIDE WORK
My wife is an academic and the Head of the Department of American Studies and Mass Media – we have been together for thirty years and have two sons. When I'm not working, I read books (mainly on an e-reader) and travel (usually with a small backpack).

My vision is a HUMAN UNIVERSITY.
As Rector of the University of Lodz, I manage the university, its activities and represent it externally. I set its strategic development directions and supervise their implementation. I cooperate with the Vice-Rectors and Deans, who are responsible for coordinating administrative processes and supporting Directors and Heads in managing individual units.
I ensure that academic and administrative goals are achieved in an integrated manner, which contributes to the efficient functioning of the university as a whole. I work with the Chancellor and his Deputies in the area ofmanaging central administration, which allows us to use resources better and respond to the needs of the University more quickly.
My competences include, in particular:
Tuesdays: 2 p.m. - 3.30 p.m.
Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
