How Does the Environment Protect Our Country? Key Findings from the Report "The Impact of Climate Change on Poland's National Security"

The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of climate threats on various aspects of Poland's security. Climate change, resulting from human activity, poses a growing threat to the security of citizens and state structures. This threat has many dimensions, which are addressed in individual sections of the report – from geostrategic and health, through energy, food, industrial and transport, to the environment. Failure to adequately address it carries economic, social and political consequences.

Dr. hab. Iwona Wagner, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz (Department of UNESCO Chair on Ecohydrology and Applied Ecology) has been invited to prepare a part of the report on the importance of blue-green infrastructure (BZI) for national security.

Prof. Wagner

The researcher underlines that blue-green infrastructure – in other words, a well-functioning natural system – is crucial for mitigating extreme weather events, increasing water retention, and – in the long term – maintaining our country's food security. Consciously shaping this infrastructure, including protecting ecosystems and implementing the provisions of the NRL – the Regulation on the Restoration of Natural Resources – should be a priority in spatial planning at all levels. Integrating spatial planning with river basin management is essential – such action can support the protection and restoration of water resources.

Prof. Wagner

The quality of nature is not only our national asset but also a matter of national security. Our country's blue-green infrastructure should be treated as critical infrastructure.
