Polish Science Day? We Observe It Every Day at UniLodz

19 February, Polish Science Day, is the perfect opportunity to honour those working in research and teaching at the University of Lodz. Those who make us healthier, help us fight disease more easily and ultimately live longer. Those who shape ideas and pave the way, avoiding many catastrophes that, just a few decades ago, decided the fate of the human species.

They explain the world

While it may be hard to believe, last year, scientists from the University of Lodz appeared in the media almost 80,000 times, explaining, inspiring, debunking myths and combating the disinformation that, like a cancer, is infesting the reality around us today.

The more disinformation there is in the world, the more journalists reach for reliable information – for the statements of those who possess knowledge and are willing to share it.

Scientists, for they are the ones we're talking about, change the world for the better with their tedious, often not so glamorous work in offices and laboratories.

They conduct research, often additionally teach and are present almost 24/7 in the media: from the press, through radio and television, to online portals. The presence of the UniLodz scientists on the programmes of Poland's largest television stations has become almost commonplace. As have calls from journalists seeking analyses and answers to the most challenging questions from our researchers.

This speaks volumes about the quality of research conducted at UniLodz and the commitment of our researchers to discovering and sharing with the world – because the University is more than just walls and books. Above all, it's the people who explain the world, illuminate the unknown and inspire thousands of students at the Humane University with their work.

We provide space and support

At the University of Lodz, we understand that knowledge only truly takes on meaning when it's shared. That's why our researchers engage in hundreds of activities and we support them in doing so. Ultimately, our goal is to create a space where everyone – regardless of age or experience – can experience science personally, directly, and in person. We don't stop at words. How do we do this?

We support the organisation of press conferences and organise press briefings, including press breakfasts, during which our experts answer the most challenging questions, share their achievements and discuss current research.

The Project Support Centre at the University of Lodz helps achieve success and secure internal and external grants. It supports scientists at the University of Lodz in conducting reliable research.

We don't forget about those at the beginning of their research journey. We know that beginnings aren't always easy, which is why UniLodz has the Young Scientists Development Council – established to ensure that young scientists don't feel alone in the face of challenges.

We organise competitions, including UniLodz Impact. This is one of the initiatives designed to enable young researchers to gain international experience, build networks and develop their research skills.

They inspire and popularise

We proudly position ourselves as a leader in science outreach. However, this wouldn't be possible without the scientists and scholars of the University of Lodz, who boldly take science beyond the university walls, giving it the opportunity to engage with society.

It's no coincidence that today, on 19 February, we also celebrate the third anniversary of the Science Inspires initiative, which presents science in an understandable, engaging way that demonstrates its real impact on our lives.

Science Inspires includes video productions and popular science texts that showcase research processes and their results, but also discuss the arduous, challenging and challenging nature of scientific work. It also showcases the profiles of scientists from the University of Lodz, focusing on their motivations for choosing the scientific profession and the impact of research on their surroundings.

Our wishes on Polish Science Day? – May the desire to acquire and share knowledge never cease – may it become a driving force, inspiring future generations to boldly discover and explain the world!
