Jubileuszowy koncert z okazji 45-lecia współpracy z Uniwersytetem w Giessen

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the cooperation between the University of Lodz and the Justus Liebig University Giessen, a concert of the University Orchestra of JLU in Giessen took place. Compositions by W.A. Mozart and D. Cimaros could be heard at the Concert Hall of the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź. This way, one of the most valuable scientific alliances for the University of Lodz was celebrated.

Justus Liebig University in Giessen and the University of Lodz celebrate the 45th anniversary of their cooperation this year. It is one of the longest lasting and at the same time one of the most valuable scientific alliances that the University of Lodz has entered in its history.

45 YEARS OF COOPERATION

Nearly half-a-century cooperation has resulted in numerous scientific projects, joint publications and conferences, as well as cultural projects. More information about the cooperation can be found in the announcement of the jubilee concert.

PHOTO REPORT FROM THE EVENT

Today, such cooperation, cooperation across borders and other divisions, is something natural, desirable, and even necessary. But was it the same in 1978? At that time, the possibility of cooperation between a university from the Eastern Bloc and a university operating behind the Iron Curtain was a real breakthrough. A dozen years before Poland regained its sovereignty our researchers could already take advantage of the opportunities offered by the West

– emphasised Prof. Łukasz Bogucki, the University of Lod Vice-Rector for International Relations.

After 45 years, in completely different historical circumstances, the relationship between our universities is still strong, it is still needed. Modern science cannot exist without international cooperation. Therefore, I am glad that we continue to stand together in this endeavour and strengthen our friendship

– added Prof. Bogucki

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA

The Orchestra of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen is not much younger than the aforementioned Polish-German agreement – it was founded a year after its conclusion. Since 2005, the orchestra has been led by Music Director Stefan Ottersbach. The orchestra's musicians include students of almost all faculties, professors and employees of UJLG. The repertoire includes works from the Baroque period, the great symphonies of the Classical and Romantic periods, and contemporary music from the late 20th and the 21st centuries.  As the "sound ambassador" of the Justus Liebig University, the University Orchestra has visited many European countries. It hasn't been their first performance in Poland, either Poland.

The orchestra's performance was divided into two parts – in the first one, the audience listened to the works: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "The Hebrides," op. 26 and the Concerto for Two Flutes and Orchestra in G Major by Domenico Cimarosa. After the break, the English folk song suite by Ralph Vaughn Williams and Symphony No. 35 in D major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were performed.

More information about the orchestra can be found in the announcement of the jubilee concert.
