45 years of cooperation

In the course of 45 years of cooperation between the University of Lodz and the Justus Liebig University in Giessen numerous scientific projects and joint publications have been created. Conferences, symposia, cultural events and International Summer Schools have been organised. The scientific release of the full edition of "Kronika Getta Łódzkiego" [Lodz wartime Ghetto chronicles] (Copernicus Prize 2022, awarded by DFG and the Foundation for Polish Science) is certainly one of the most significant achievements.

In addition to activities within the framework of the cooperation agreement, we should also mention active student exchanges within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, new opportunities for joint classes in an online/remote mode, as well as scientific cooperation and exchange of academics. The cooperation between the two universities involves researchers from a very wide range of specialisations, including almost all faculties.

As part of teaching cooperation, a number of workshops and regular seminars for students and doctoral students, led by lecturers from Lodz and Giessen are organised. Polish language and culture of our country have been taught in Giessen for years, and study visits in Lodz have been organised for German students.

Both universities have established Research Centres dedicated to studies on Central and Eastern European issues. In 2020, both universities established Information Points where students and employees can find out about the VIP (Virtual International Programme) and other opportunities for exchange or research cooperation, as well as funding programmes.

The cooperation with JLU in Giessen is one of the most active contacts between the University of Lodz and foreign universities. For 45 years, our universities have been linked by partnership and friendship, and our joint activities undoubtedly contribute to the integration of both academic communities and to the further development of sucessful partnership.

More about the performers:

  • The Orchestra of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen was founded in 1979 by the University Music Director Brigitte Schön. Since 2005, it has been led by music director Stefan Ottersbach. The orchestra's musicians include students of almost all faculties, professors and employees of UJLG. The repertoire includes works from the Baroque period, the great symphonies of the Classical and Romantic periods, and contemporary music from the late 20th and the 21st centuries.
  • Stefan Ottersbach studied at the conservatories of Cologne, Bern, Düsseldorf and Munich. He completed his studies with a master class diploma. Since 2005, he has been university music director at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. From 2009 to 2017, he was principal conductor of the Frankfurt Symphonic Orchestra, with which he conducted various radio and television productions at the Hessischer Rundfunk. The collaboration culminated in a concert conducted by him at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2016. In 2012, Ottersbach also took over the artistic direction of the Opera Schloss Laubach. In this capacity, he conducted the rehearsal and performance of Entführung aus dem Serail by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in July 2012. In December 2017, the University of Music Karlsruhe appointed him as a lecturer in orchestral conducting and in 2019 as a conductor of the orchestra of music education students.
  • Sophie Haun received her first flute lessons at the age of seven at the Kreismusikschule Gütersloh.  During high school she was a junior student at the Youth Academy of the Musikhochschule Münster. She is first prize winner of the national competition “Jugend musiziert” and a former member of the Landesjugendorchester NRW and other regional youth orchestras. To this day, he regularly performs in concert evenings as a member of various chamber music formations and has created the music-philosophical theatre production "Art is Different", which premiered in 2015.
