Personnel for the Biotechnology Sector – Needs and Ideas of Universities, Students and Employers

The Polish biotechnology sector requires a new model of cooperation between universities, students and employers. The conclusions from the meeting between university, student and business representatives show that practical education, clear communication about career opportunities, and a greater presence of businesses in the education process are of key importance. What do universities, students and employers need to achieve this?

We are presenting a summary of the results of the inspiration workshops initiated by Rezon Bio (a Polpharma Biologics brand) under the slogan "Horizons of Biotechnology – the file is available below.

Inspirations include the development of economic councils at universities, greater flexibility in internships and traineeships, campaigns promoting career paths in biotechnology, and new forms of cooperation – from mentoring to joint hackathons and micro-courses in technology parks.

Students want to act, not just listen

During the meeting, young people emphasised their desire to learn through experience – through cooperation with companies, participation in research projects and gaining international experience. They expect clear information about possible career paths, realistic earnings and career prospects. Practical aspects are also important: flexible internship programmes, the possibility of financial support and certificates confirming acquired competencies.

Universities need partners, not just students

From the perspective of academic management, improving the image of biotechnology as a field of study is crucial. Universities want students to make informed choices about this field. This cannot be achieved without cooperation with the industry – in developing programmes, conducting classes and exchanging experiences.

Faculty representatives who manage the educational process underlined the need for greater business involvement in the educational process: through conducting classes, inspiring student projects and jointly utilizing R&D laboratories and technology parks. Teaching support is also important, including grants, micro-credentials and access to modern technologies (AI, automation, data processing).

Employers Need Work-Ready Graduates

In turn, employers – biotechnology companies – want to co-create study programmes that prepare graduates for work here and now. They are seeking candidates with practical skills, analytical abilities, digital skills and soft skills. There is also a clear need for easier access to students and graduates, e.g., through digital tools that would facilitate relationship building and the verification of future employee competencies.

The workshop was held at the Rezon Bio's headquarters in Duchnice on 25 September 2025.
