Functions

Bio

I graduated in Ethnology in 2005, received my PhD in the Humanities in 2011, and have been an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, University of Łódź, since 2011.

Interests

In my research practice, I focus on LANDSCAPE as a cultural practice and on CULTURAL HERITAGE as a dynamic process, inscribed both in the landscape and in memory. My work is grounded primarily in the perspective of Critical Heritage Studies, which enables the analysis not only of heritage manifestations but also of the processes through which heritage is produced, negotiated, and contested, as well as their significance for contemporary communities.

The city is my most frequent field of research – a space in which I explore the relationships between memory, landscape, identity, and the everyday practices of residents. I am particularly interested in the dynamics of local spatial transformations, the ways narratives about the past are constructed, and the impact these narratives have on contemporary forms of identification and social action. For me, the most important question is not what landscape is, but rather what landscape does.

I am especially committed to inter- and transdisciplinary initiatives, particularly those developed at the intersection of ethnography and the archaeology of the contemporary past. An important dimension of my work is also applied humanities. I support cross-sector collaboration and engage in projects carried out jointly with cultural institutions, local governments, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. I also develop my anthropological practice beyond the university, leading educational workshops, community-based cultural projects, and commissioned research.

Main Research Interests

  • Critical Heritage Studies – heritage as a process; practices of inheritance and heritage-making; strategies of heritage protection, management, and design;
  • Landscape Studies – landscape as process and practice; an instrument of cultural power; an agentive force; a mnemotopos; a construct that may become a site of struggle over meanings and the meanings attributed to particular groups;
  • Urban Anthropology and Anthropology in the City – urban spaces and urban narratives; the identities of cities and their inhabitants; urban sensory landscapes; my principal field sites are Łódź and the small towns of the Łódź region;
  • Community Ethnography – research and action conducted for and with local communities; participatory research methods and the co-production of knowledge;
  • Applied Humanities / Applied Anthropology – cultural animation and facilitation, cross-sector collaboration, social projects, and inter- and transdisciplinary initiatives;
  • Ethnoarchaeology of the Contemporary Past – research encounters between ethnography and the archaeology of the contemporary world;
  • Sensory Anthropology – culturally diverse organizations of the sensorium and sensory ethnography as a research practice.
