A novel by the University of Lodz literary scholar nominated for the "Nike" Literary Award

The latest novel by dr Anna Ciarkowska entitled 'Dewocje' [Devotions], is among the twenty nominees for the "Nike" 2022 Literary Award. The author – a poet, novelist and literary scholar, works as an Assistant at the Department of Theory of Literature at the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz.

"Dewocje” is the third book in Anna Ciarkowska's oeuvre – after the volume of poetry "Chłopcy, których kocham", with her own illustrations (Otwarte Publishing House, 2018) and the novel "Pestki" (Otwarte Publishing House, 2019). In the nominated novel, the author tackles the problem of Polish religiosity, family piety, the burden of faith, framing the narrative in the form of a confession of the main character – a teenage girl. 

Anna Ciarkowska is a graduate of High School number one under the patronage of Nicolas Copernicus in Lodz, she studied Romance philology and cultural studies at the University of Lodz. In 2017, she obtained a PhD degree in literary studies.

The "Nike" Literary Award is one of the most important distinctions for Polish writers and poets. It is founded by "Gazeta Wyborcza" and the Agora Foundation. Among the twenty nominees of this year's 26th edition of the award, there is also a collection of poetry entitled "Mondo cane" by Professor Jerzy Jarniewicz, also from the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz.
