Czy Polacy ufają nauce? UŁ pionierem

A team managed by prof. Izabela Warwas (Faculty of Economics and Sociology, UL) has prepared a report pertaining to the trust of Poles to scientific content. The document has been prepared as part of an international project CONCISE (Communication role on perception and beliefs of EU Citizens about Science). The studies, funded within Horizon 2020 programme, were carried out in Poland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Slovakia. What picture of a Polish society emerges from the analyses of the team of sociologists and economists from Lodz? Do Poles trust more scientists or celebrities? What can be done to disseminate scientific knowledge even more effectively? Answers to these questions, based on the results obtained by our researchers, were published by the Polish Press Agency (PAP)*.

The subject of scientific communication is still poorly recognized in Poland. Our universities do not train scientific communication specialists.  Italy, Portugal and Spain can be treated as role models here. However, with this respect our University stands out and our experts are more and more visible in the media - it is thanks to the activity of the University of Lodz Promotion Centre.

Going back to the more general thought concerning Polish academic world, it needs to be pointed out that in Poland there is still no culture of sharing scientific knowledge with the society. This is not included in the assessment of work of university employees. We are teachers, researchers but we are not obliged to share our research results. However, we need to remember this is a fundamental mission of each university, which is particularly visible in the era of fake news dissemination. Scientists have to help people understand the environment, help them conduct analytical screening of information so as not to strengthen pseudoscience - comments on the research results of the team prof. Izabela Warwas.

More information on the results of the study is available in the reports on the project website
