The success in the DAAD competition confirms the University of Lodz’s potential to create a strong interdisciplinary academic centre. The university’s application underwent a comprehensive evaluation process, an important stage of which was the visit of the DAAD expert committee to Lodz on 8 October. During the meeting, representatives of the University presented its scientific achievements, previous experience in cooperation with German partners, and plans for the development of the new Centre.
The new Centre for German and European Studies (IDEE) will open up new opportunities for research, education and academic exchange. It will bring together researchers, students and doctoral candidates from a range of disciplines, support academic mobility, and foster cooperation with institutions belonging to the international DAAD network. The project will be implemented in cooperation with the University of Lodz’s strategic partner, Justus Liebig University Giessen.
The establishment of the Centre will further strengthen the position of the University of Lodz as one of the leading centres for research and dialogue on contemporary Germany, Europe and Polish-German relations in Central Europe. Key strengths of the University’s application included not only its academic achievements and extensive network of international partnerships, but also the city’s multicultural heritage and its long-standing historical links with Germany, which provide a natural point of reference for the themes to be explored within the Centre.
