We are delighted to announce the active participation of PolBOL (Polish Barcode of Life) representatives in the 3rd Scientific Conference of Young Environmental Biologists, organized by students from the Invertebrate Zoology Student Research Group at the University of Lodz. This inspiring event once again showcased the immense potential and passion of the young generation of Polish naturalists.
A highlight of the program was the "24h DNA Barcoding" workshop, led by our representatives: Dr. Tomasz Mamos and Gabriela Karlik, MSc.
The rapid "sample-to-result" workflow—completed within just 24 hours—was made possible by the use of modern nanopore sequencing technology (ONT – Oxford Nanopore Technologies). During the intensive sessions, participants worked through every stage of the molecular workflow:
- preservation of biological material,
- DNA isolation and library preparation,
- real-time sequencing using ONT devices,
- data analysis, including an introduction to the structure and operation of the BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) database—a global repository for DNA barcodes.
The use of ONT technology allowed students to see how modern genetics can be applied directly to environmental research, delivering results at an unprecedented speed.
