In the autumn of 1941, the Nazi authorities of the Reich began the process of settling Jews from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg in the ghetto which was created in Lodz in the spring of 1940. Within less than a month, another 20,000 people were transported to the compound area which was already inhabited by nearly 160,000 Polish Jews. In the following months this number kept growing. Among the prisoners of the ghetto there were many scientists, doctors, writers and artists, including those from Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Frankfurt. According to various sources and estimates, of about 220,000 Jews in the Lodz Ghetto, from 8,000 up to 15,000 survived the war.
Paying tribute to the victims of these cruel crimes the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź, on behalf of the President of the City of Lodz, Hanna Zdanowska, organises events commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Deportation of Jews from Western Europe to the Litzmannstadt Ghetto - a dramatic twist of history that tragically connected the fate of Jews from Lodz and their brothers from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Luxembourg.
