UniLodz Students and Staff Among the Top Macroeconomic Forecasters in Poland

Students operating in the Financial Decisions Student Science Club and the 4Future Student Science Club at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz have achieved outstanding results in a prestigious macroeconomic forecasting competition, competing with the largest financial institutions and analytical teams in the country. This success is the result of many months of work, as well as cooperation carried out under the supervision of dr hab. Joanna Stawska, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz and Dr Wojciech Zatoń.

In the competition involving 37 forecasting institutions and teams – including major banks and renowned analytical centres – representatives of the University of Lodz ranked among the top performers in the overall classification. Dr Wojciech Zatoń took 4th place overall, while the jointly classified 4Future Student Science Club and Financial Decisions Student Science Club of the University of Lodz placed 5th.

Securing 1st place in the consumption forecast category and 5th place in forecasts of the National Bank of Poland’s reference interest rate was a particularly notable achievement of the students. Dr Wojciech Zatoń, in turn, achieved 1st place in USD/PLN exchange rate forecasts, 3rd place in forecasts of the National Bank of Poland’s reference interest rate, and 4th place in inflation forecasts.

Students from the Financial Decisions Student Science Club of the University of Lodz have been preparing macroeconomic forecasts together with Dr Wojciech Zatoń for several quarters. They are published in nationwide economic media. The achieved results confirm the high level of analytical competence of University of Lodz students and the effectiveness of cooperation between students and academic staff.

The results of the competition were published by Parkiet.

Participants in the competition forecast trends in the Polish economy every three months. Importantly, they do so for four quarters ahead, which means that success in the edition summarising forecasts for 2025 was also determined by predictions formulated as early as the first half of 2024. What matters is not so much the ability to capture short-term trends, but rather the accuracy of longer-term scenarios and the professionalism with which they are quantified.
