Prof Aleksander Welfe, an econometrician and macroeconomist, Head of the Department of Econometric Models and Forecasts at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, University of Lodz, was appointed first vice-president of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the term 2023-2026. The election of the four vice-presidents, whose candidacies were proposed by the President-elect, Prof Marek Konarzewski, was made during the 148th Session of the Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The remaining vice-presidents include Prof. Dariusz Jemielniak, dr hab. Mirosława Ostrowska and Prof. Natalia Sobczak. In the term that is just about to start Prof. Aleksander Welfe will be entrusted with the mission of creating a new law on the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), as well as issues related to statutory and organisational change. He will also deal with, among other things, the V Faculty of Medical Sciences and Committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Professor Aleksander Welfe works on econometric theory, econometric modelling and the use of models for forecasting economic processes and simulation analyses of alternative economic policies. He is the creator of a series of macromodels of Poland's national economy based on quarterly data and the first ever macromodel based on monthly data. For more than two decades, he had been cooperating with the Nobel Prize winner, Lawrence R. Klein, which resulted in their joint book "Principles of Macroeconometric Modelling".

He has been a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (in Polish: PAN) since 2007, and its full member since 2020. He was Vice-President of the Lodz Branch of PAN from 2010 to 2013, and its President from 2013 to the present. He has been a member of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 2013 to the present.

Prof. Aleksander Welfe has been a member of the Academie Europeenne des Sciences, des Arts et des Lettres since 2010. Since graduation, he has been associated with the University of Lodz, where he heads the Department of Econometric Models and Forecasts. For over 20 years he has also been working at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. In the past, he delivered lectures at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University.  He is an organiser of periodic scientific conferences, animator of scientific life. Prof. Aleksander Welfe is a founder and editor-in-chief of the Central European Journal of Economic Modelling and Econometrics indexed in the WoS and SCOPUS databases. He was the advisor to the President of the National Bank of Poland in the years 2007-2017, member of the Scientific Statistical Council since 1995 and its chairman in the years 2005-2019.
