Campus That's Alive. Summary of the Opening Weekend at the University of Lodz Student Campus

Several initiatives, which were held last weekend, strengthened ties within our campus: the Lumumby Run, Urban Forms Workshops and the "Powitalia at Lumumbowo!" event. These initiatives demonstrated the power of cooperation between all members of our community: students, campus staff and central administration. It turns out our campus is bustling with life, and the start of the academic year is a great excuse to work together as one #unilodzteam.

We run and help

The Lumumby Run took place on 10 October, at noon sharp. The Baden-Powell Park was filled with the buzz of conversation and a feverish warm-up before the race. The goal was not so much competition, but cooperation between our students and staff. The result of this joint effort was a fundraiser that will be donated to the "Dom w Łodzi" Foundation. What did the participants and organisers think about the event?

The atmosphere was fantastic: everyone came with a very positive attitude. You could feel the mutual kindness and willingness to work towards a common goal, which was to raise money for charity. In short: great empathy and a genuine heart! – smiles Julia Patok, the race organiser and the Head of the University of Lodz Campus Council.

We create a common space

The UniLodz students had the opportunity to participate in a two-day workshop organised in partnership with the Urban Forms Foundation, which will result in the cooperative creation of a mural painting on the premises of the Student Campus. This is not only a chance to see how to communicate with the community about such a project, but also a great opportunity to have your own say on the look of our campus.

We have picnics, even in the rain

Clouds and drizzle didn't stop us from gathering in large numbers near the UniLodz Dormitory No. 9 for the "Powitalia at Lumumbowo!" event. It was opened by the University of Lodz Rector, Prof. dr hab. Rafał Matera, and the University of Lodz Vice-Rector for Academic and External Relations, dr hab. Radosław Olszewski. They both expressed gratitude for organising the event and underlined that the University of Lodz was, above all, a community: a community of mutual inspiration, courage and cooperation, open to everyone. The "Powitalia at Lumumbowo!" event was implemented as part of a grant project in the "Microgrants in the Lodz Region" competition, financed by the National Institute of Freedom – Centre for Civil Society Development under the government programme "NOWEFIO Civic Initiatives Fund" for 2021–2030.

"Powitalia at Lumumbowo!" is one of those initiatives that, according to Zuzanna Kolbus from the University of Lodz Students' Government Council – the event organiser, can permanently change the atmosphere of the Campus:

We would love the Student Campus to be a vibrant meeting place. And I'm not just talking about the dormitories, but also of the beautiful green space around us. It's a great place for grassroots initiatives, meetings and picnics. Together, we're creating a unique microclimate where everyone knows each other and lives together as neighbours.

We have fun, develop and create a second home

Organising all of these events wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the cooperation of students, the student government, Student Campus staff, and the University of Lodz administration. Building community is the primary goal of all the events taking place on our campus.

For me, the Student Campus is more than just a place to work. I love cooperating and exchanging positive energy with our staff and students. I enjoy working together and seeing so much happening. The campus is my second home – emphasises Anna Felisiak, Head of University Dormitories, adding: Integrate and come to our office, even if just for a cup of coffee!
