An Exhibition on Mathematics, Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence
How did we arrive at a world in which algorithms learn, predict and support decision-making? What lies behind the development of artificial intelligence and technologies that are increasingly shaping our everyday lives? The creators of the exhibition “Którędy tu doszliśmy?”, prepared by the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź in cooperation with the Centre for Digital Biology and Biomedical Sciences BIOBANK ŁÓDŹ®, sought answers to these questions.
Inspiration: Mathematics Explained in Plain Language
The exhibition was conceived and curated by three curators: Izabela Jurczyk and Piotr Gryz from the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź, and Dr Michał Seweryn from the Centre for Digital Biology and Biomedical Sciences BIOBANK ŁÓDŹ®. The visual identity of the project was designed by student Kamil Odroń.
The inspiration for the exhibition was the book "Którędy tu doszliśmy?” [Which Way Did We Get Here?] by Dr Michał Seweryn, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz. As a statistician and bioinformatician, he specialises in the analysis of genomic data. The book, which is due to be published in the near future, explains the mathematical concepts underpinning modern technologies in an accessible and engaging manner.
The exhibition’s creators decided to translate mathematical concepts and ideas into the language of art, creating a space that allows visitors not only to understand but also to experience the mechanisms behind contemporary digital systems.
Where Art Meets Science
The exhibition is interdisciplinary in nature. It combines new media art with themes drawn from mathematics, computer science and artificial intelligence. The concept and implementation were led by Izabela Jurczyk from the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź.
The works on display explore machine learning, adaptation, classification, information, uncertainty and randomness. Complex mathematical and algorithmic processes are presented through image, movement, code, space and interaction, making them more accessible and understandable to audiences.
Experience Rather Than Observation
“Którędy tu doszliśmy?” is not an exhibition that can simply be viewed. It is an exhibition that encourages visitors to pause, reflect and actively participate. Visitors were able to immerse themselves in the created environment, discovering successive layers of meaning and the relationships between mathematics, algorithms and artificial intelligence.
The immersive nature of the exhibition offered a perspective on AI different from the one familiar from computer and smartphone screens, demonstrating how mathematical ideas are translated into contemporary technologies.
