We encourage all science enthusiasts to spend the evening of Friday, 9 October, at the EC1 Science and Technology Centre in Łódź. The Lodz Night of Scientists, taking place between 6:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., will allow visitors to discover the fascinating world of scientific discoveries in an accessible and engaging way. Workshops, demonstrations, laboratory experiments, inspiring lectures and conversations with researchers will be waiting for you.

The University of Lodz community is taking part in this exceptional event for the fourth time. It provides an opportunity to understand the principles governing the world around us through reliable research methods. We recognise that science does not exist solely within university walls, but also in the public sphere, where people meet, talk and seek answers to important questions.

This year, our university will be represented by staff members from nearly all faculties and units of the University of Lodz, including the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, the Faculty of Physics and Applied Informatics, the Faculty of International and Political Studies, the Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Philology, the Faculty of Philosophy and History, the Faculty of Educational Sciences, the Faculty of Geographical Sciences, the Faculty of Law and Administration, and the Faculty of Chemistry. Students from the Interfaculty Science Popularisation Club of the University of Lodz and high school pupils recognised within the UL Innovation Laboratory project will be also joining the event.

The EC1 Science and Technology Centre is opening all its doors! Look for us in different locations, on every floor and at different times. You will find more than 50 diverse activities prepared by the UniLodz community.

“Tomorrow You. Towards Transhumanism”

As a classical university, the University of Lodz will ensure that the humanities are well represented at the science festival that is the Lodz Night of Scientists, offering content relevant to every individual. We would especially like to invite you to two panel discussions accompanying the exhibition “Tomorrow You. W stronę transhumanizmu” [Tomorrow You. Towards Transhumanism].

The first discussion, entitled “Transhumanizm – kim się stajemy?” [Transhumanism: Who Are We Becoming?], will be moderated by Dr Magdalena Kosiada-Sylburska, Head of the EC1 Science and Technology Centre. The panellists will be dr hab. Krzysztof Pabis, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, Vice-Rector for Popularisation of Science and Education, and dr hab. Tomasz Sieczkowski, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz.

Is transhumanism a distant vision of the future, or is it already the reality in which we live? How does our understanding of humanity change when technology begins to modify not only the body, but also emotions, morality and social roles? Together with experts, we will reflect on the direction of these transformations and their significance for contemporary society. We will discuss the opportunities, challenges and consequences of technological development, as well as how it may affect the future of humanity and future generations.

The discussion is directly related to the exhibition “Tomorrow You. W stronę transhumanizmu”, created as part of a scientific and artistic project carried out by the University of Lodz and the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź.

The second event offering deeper insight into the exhibition’s message will be a discussion entitled “O samotności i relacjach w erze sztucznej inteligencji" [Loneliness and Relationships in the Age of Artificial Intelligence]. How does artificial intelligence affect our relationships with others? Can the development of new technologies help us cope with a growing sense of loneliness? What does the way we use AI reveal about ourselves? Join us for a conversation about the impact of artificial intelligence on our everyday lives, emotions and relationships, and about how to find our place in a world where technology is becoming an increasingly important part of it.
The speakers will include Dr Marta Kucharska-Hauk, Dr Julita Czernecka and experts from the Faculty of Management, University of Lodz.

That evening, opportunities to engage with science will also be provided by:

  • Lodz University of Technology,
  • Medical University of Lodz,
  • Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology, Gliwice,
  • Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
  • Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital Research Institute.
