Kya was abandoned by her family and grows up alone in the marshes, far from civilisation. However, she is not who the residents of the nearby town believe her to be. She is a very sensitive and intelligent young woman who lacks closeness and human touch. Things become complicated when her former boyfriend is found dead. Kya becomes a suspect in the murder.

Chuck Noland is an engineer working for a courier company. His life, both professional and personal, is entirely governed by time pressure and his worldwide travel forces him into frequent separations from his fiancée. One day, the plane he is travelling on crashes. Chuck is the only survivor. After a few days, he reaches an uninhabited land. Far from civilisation, he must fight not only for survival but also cope with loneliness.

Will is a veteran who has lived for years with his daughter Tom deep in the forest. One day, their peace is disrupted by social services that seek to integrate the family into society. Tom is fascinated by the outside world but the traumatised Will cannot cope and longs to return to the wilderness.

Thirty-year-old Pietro decides to leave the big city behind and move to the mountains. He cannot find his place in his previous, noisy life. He felt truly free and happy only in the wild Alps. The love of the mountains instilled in him leads him into a world where new acquaintances and old friendships will become a path to finding himself.

In 1992, after graduating from Emory University, an outstanding student and athlete Christopher McCandless decides to break away from his previous, monotonous life. He gives away his possessions, donates his savings to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the remote wilderness.
