We Are Forging New Partnerships Within the UNIC Alliance

Ruhr University Bochum (Germany) hosted a three-day workshop (10–12 March) during which representatives from UNIC member universities worked on developing new, interdisciplinary research collaborations. The alliance’s goal is to build a mobile, transnational academic community that collectively addresses the challenges facing post-industrial cities.

Meeting of the UNIC Research Support Expert Group

On the first day, during the meeting of the UNIC Research Support Expert Group, the University of Lodz was represented by Dr Hanna Zajączkowska from the University of Lodz Project Support Centre. Discussions focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between universities, challenges related to securing joint grants and the need for better coordination among research offices. One idea was to create a map of expert knowledge and research priorities at partner universities.

Summary of work on the UNIC BLENDS Project

The meeting also provided an opportunity to summarise work on the UNIC BLENDS project, which has been submitted to the Higher Education Initiative programme. The initiative is to support entrepreneurship education and foster cooperation in knowledge and technology transfer through the creation of the Alliance Tech Transfer Hub. The University of Lodz was represented at the meeting by the Centre for Technology Transfer and the Faculty of Economics and Sociology.

Two-day workshops – well-being, ecological transition, AI

The next two days took the form of workshops during which researchers worked on ideas for joint projects. Quick networking sessions, thematic mapping and brainstorming helped identify common research areas and begin developing initial concepts. Teams defined project goals, potential impact and possible consortium structures. The event concluded with short presentations of emerging ideas – ranging from research on health and well-being, through the ecological transformation of neighbourhoods, to the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
