The ceremonies (held in two parts on 10 and 16 June) were traditionally organised in the Fireplace Room of the Biedermann’s Palace. Each ceremony began with the Polish national anthem followed by an address by the Rector of the University of Lodz, Prof. Dr Rafał Matera, who spoke about this beautiful academic tradition of renewing doctorates.
This year, the following individuals had their doctorates ceremonially renewed:
- Prof. dr hab. Janina Jakubowska‑Gabara – upon the request of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection,
- Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Suliborski – upon the request of the Faculty of Geographical Sciences,
- Prof. dr hab. Jacek Matuszewski – upon the request of the Faculty of Law and Administration,
- Dr Janina Stankiewicz – upon the request of the Faculty of Management,
and, upon the request of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology:
- Prof. dr hab. Krystyna Kietlińska,
- Prof. dr hab. Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski,
- Prof. dr hab. Władysław Milo,
- Prof. dr hab. Jan Jacek Sztaudynger.
During the ceremonies, the honourees received commemorative diplomas signed by the Rector of the University of Lodz, their thesis supervisors and the Deans of their home faculties. The Laureates’ speeches were rich in anecdotes, reflections, memories from the past 50 years and summaries of their outstanding academic careers.
The custom of the ceremonial renewal of doctorates was initiated by the Senate of the University of Lodz in 2000. To date, 150 distinguished individuals associated with the University of Lodz have been honoured in this way.
