Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. Is It Just a Slogan?

How can we create a more open, accessible and welcoming environment for work, study and social life? These were among the key questions discussed by participants of the 1st Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Forum in Łódź. The event brought together representatives of business, public administration, social organisations and academia, providing a space for the exchange of experiences, good practices and inspiration for future action.

Yesterday, the 1st Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Forum was held in Łódź. Organised jointly by the Foundation “W człowieku widzieć brata”, the HaKoach Association and the University of Lodz, the event attracted participants from across Poland.

On behalf of the University of Lodz, attendees were welcomed by the Rector’s Representative for Equal Treatment, Dr Aleksandra Różalska. The UniLodz perspective in the discussions was represented by Dr Agata Rudnicka-Reichel, Marta Nowacka, Marta Malinowska and Eliza Gaust.

Representatives of the University of Lodz, as well as members of the Equality Council, were also present among the audience.

The discussion panels featured representatives of non-governmental organisations, businesses, higher education institutions and public institutions. The voices of persons with disabilities, Deaf people and individuals living with rare diseases were also strongly represented. These perspectives are particularly important when discussing equal opportunities and accessibility for everyone.

Throughout the forum, participants repeatedly emphasised that some of the greatest challenges facing us today, regardless of industry or sector, concern increasing social polarisation and the way we engage in dialogue. Building communication based on respect, attentiveness and empathy is becoming especially important, as is developing language that does not divide but instead helps us better understand the diverse experiences and needs of others.

As Dr Aleksandra Różalska highlighted:

At the University of Łódź, we promote diversity and equality through a coherent equality policy, under which we carry out a range of initiatives. Thanks to the ‘UniLodz: a discrimination-free zone’ project, students and staff were able to take part in workshops and training sessions, as well as receive psychological support. Previously, as part of the RESET (Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together) project, we trained 2,500 people in anti-discrimination, non-violent communication and the implementation of a DEI culture at the university. We also initiate artistic projects, such as the forthcoming exhibition ‘Zwroty’, and information and education campaigns, e.g. ‘UniLodz RAZEM’.  These events contribute to building an inclusive culture at the University of Łódź.

At UniLodz, we have been working for years to ensure that every student, doctoral student and employee can feel safe and know that support is available whenever needed. Although not all solutions are perfect, we continue to develop initiatives and tools that help build a more open, accessible and welcoming academic community.

The forum provided an opportunity not only to exchange experiences and good practices, but also to reflect collectively on how to create workplaces, educational environments and social spaces where diversity is recognised as a value and where equal opportunities and inclusion become part of everyday practice.
