The meeting was attended by the Vice-President of Lodz, Małgorzata Moskwa-Wodnicka, the Chairman of the Lodz City Council, Bartosz Domaszewicz, the Director of the Institute of Sociology, Alicja Łaska-Formejster, the Professor’s widow – Sylwia Matuszak, as well as representatives of the Łódzkie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Książki.
Prof. Grzegorz Matuszak
Grzegorz Jan Matuszak (born 8 January 1941 in Lodz, died 13 September 13) – a holder of MA degree in Polish Philology (1963), PhD degree in Sociology (1977), habilitated doctor (1990) and an Associate Professor at the University of Lodz (1994). He was employed at the University of Lodz as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Sociology since 1977, since 1981 in the Department of Profession Sociology, and since 1994 as an Associate Professor in the same unit, which in 2003 became the Department of Sociology of Politics and Morality. He was also the Head of the Department of Public Affairs at the Elbląg University of Humanities and Economics. He published seven books and over sixty scientific articles in the fields of sociology of work and profession, unemployment, the formation of the middle class in Poland and the sociology of political relations. His work ethic, impeccable manners, sense of humour, passion for books, collection of small contemporary graphic artworks, loyalty to his beliefs, and extraordinary eloquence remain a testament to the unique role he played in the academic community.
Grzegorz Matuszak was a councilor on the Lodz City Council from 1990 to 2001. He chaired the Culture Committee, and between 9 October 1996 and 10 October 2001, he served as the council chairman. He represented Lodz in the Association of Polish Cities and headed the Culture Committee of the Association of Polish Cities. In 2001, he was elected senator from the Lodz district, chaired the Culture and Media Committee in the Senate, and also participated in the work of the Local Government and State Administration Committee. In 2006, 2010, and 2014, he was re-elected as a Lodz councilor.
