The UniLodz Physicist at one of the Best Observatories in the World!

Our doctoral student, Joanna Wójtowicz, is currently at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), where advanced gamma radiation research is being conducted. It is one of the best places in the world to observe space, thanks to its exceptional atmospheric conditions and minimal light pollution.

The images show the LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope), whose 23-meter diameter mirror allows for recording electromagnetic radiation with energies a trillion times greater than the visible light. Next to it, there are two MAGIC telescopes (17 m), and other LST series instruments are under construction.

The telescopes do not observe the sky in the classic way – they record the so-called Cherenkov radiation, which is created by the interaction of high-energy gamma photons with the Earth's atmosphere. Thanks to this, we can study the most energetic phenomena in the Universe, such as supernova explosions, black hole activity or mysterious gamma-ray bursts.

Research of this kind constitutes not only groundbreaking discoveries, but also an inspiration to explore the secrets of the universe.
