The University of Lodz researcher is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Film and Department of Film and Audio-Visual Media, Faculty of Philology. His research focuses on film culture, with particular emphasis on the extensive activities of the Educational Film Studio in Lodz. His research interests include the institutional conditions of Polish cinema, the history of Polish film culture after 1945, festival studies, Polish documentary films, Polish films for children and young people, and film censorship.
Dr Emil Sowiński's research projects include:
- Zapomniane ogniwa dziejów polskiej kultury audiowizualnej: Instytut Filmowy w latach 1935-1939 oraz 1945-1949 [Forgotten Links in the History of Polish Audiovisual Culture: The Film Institute in 1935-1939 and 1945-1949].
- Studio Filmowe im. Karola Irzykowskiego w latach 1981-1989 na tle polityki programowej peerelowskiej kinematografii wobec debiutów [The Karol Irzykowski Film Studio in 1981-1989 in the Context of the Programming Policy of the Polish People's Republic Cinematography Towards Debuts].
- Rozpowszechnianie filmów w Polsce w latach 1945-1989: ogólnokrajowe ramy instytucjonalne i lokalne studium przypadku [Film Distribution in Poland in 1945-1989: The National Institutional Framework and a Local Case Study].
The scientist is also an academic teacher. In the academic year 2025/2026, he is teaching the following courses:
- Distribution and Promotion of Audiovisual Productions,
- Issues of Film Production,
- Issues of Film Distribution,
- Media Systems in Poland and Around the World,
- History of Polish Film 1980-2005.
