Opening of the Exhibition of Works by Grzegorz Wróblewski, "Asemic Writing. Between Calligraphy and Painting"

Place of the event: Franciszkańska 1/5, 91-433 Łódź
When: 25 October 2025 (Saturday) 19:00 - 25 October 2025 (Saturday)

Socially engaged art often draws inspiration from scientific discourses. However, there are also artistic movements that are not subject to such inspirations, and even resist scientific recognition. We would like to invite you to a meeting with the artist and his work, which has emerged in the intermedia field of art and literature and poses a number of intriguing questions for the scientific disciplines that study and interpret these fields. The event will be held on 25 October of the current year.

The exhibition of works by Grzegorz Wróblewski "Asemic Writing: Between Calligraphy and Painting," is the first in Lodz presentation of the work of one of the leading "brulion" poets, also author of essays and plays, a visual artist, musician, and a performer who, in addition to abstract paintings, creates works in the asemic writing genre, little-known in Poland. Wróblewski is one of the most frequently translated Polish poets in the US, and his visual work is often presented in Denmark and English-speaking countries before being exhibited in Poland.

Artists working in the asemic writing movement use a variety of techniques combining asemic writing, not synonymous with any functioning alphabet, as an element of diverse visual compositions. This creates works that free themselves from cultural codes and discourses, appearing as an anarchic gesture of searching for "pure thought," a way out of communication noise, an opening to a shifting constellation of meanings, and simultaneously a medium for the author's and audience's intentions. This "plastic" gesture, in the era of the "twilight of writing" (if we draw on the materialistic concepts of philosopher Catherine Malabou), demands presentation, analysis and discussion. Grzegorz Wróblewski, a poet and American studies scholar Dr Kacper Bartczak, as well as a poet and a cultural anthropologist Dr Przemysław Owczarek will participate in the presentation accompanying the exhibition. They count on your participation, voice and insights.

The evening will feature Tomasz Świtalski, a jazz musician who, together with Grzegorz Wróblewski, will carry out a poetic, musical and asemic performance.

The project is held under the patronage of the Department of North American Literature and Culture at the Institute of English Studies at the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz.

Muzeum Książki Artystycznej w Łodzi (The Book Art Museum in Lodz) is a partner of the exhibition.
