Dzień Nauki Polskiej na UŁ

It’s difficult to overestimate the role of scientists in today's world – they use their knowledge in practice with courage and determination, taking up the most important topics for the society. They propose new solutions and possibilities of dealing with contemporary problems, thus influencing the environment. On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and Polish Science Day falling in February, we have invited several scientists from the University of Lodz to share with us their observations on science and their own research areas. We have also asked them to tell us about their successes and what they are doing to make science more interesting and accessible.

Scientists from the University of Lodz connect the world of the university offices and laboratories with the environment: on the one hand, they spread their research passion, and on the other – as they admit – they use the possibility of influencing the reality – they make the world better thanks to their work.

Science is a response to the challenges of the present day. It is good if it is open to people, allows for solving everyday problems, indicates directions of development.

- such an attitude accompanies, for example, dr Paulina Szymańska from the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Lodz. .

Dr hab. Łukasz Półtorak from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Lodz adds:

Science is a series of activities aimed at generating knowledge, and this knowledge can be compared to a workshop box. We use the tools available in it to repair the piling up problems of the modern world.

Determination of narcotic substances, art and AI, influence of social media on a family...

Researchers from the University of Lodz, who are sharing their thoughts on science with us represent the Young Scientists Development Council. It brings together representatives of twelve Faculties of the University of Lodz. We present the areas of their research interests:

  • dr Paulina Szymańska: assistant professor at the Department of Social Psychology and Family Studies. She is also the Deputy Director for Teaching in the Institute of Psychology. In her research work, she focuses on the analysis of psychological functioning of a family, mainly in the context of the impact of new technologies on it. She also has experience in international projects aimed at, among others, creating tools that increase the effectiveness of inclusive education or using virtual reality (VR) to reduce stress.
  • dr Zofia Brzozowska: assistant professor at the Department of Slavic Philology at the Faculty of Philology, University of Lodz. Paleoslavist and Byzantinist. She is the author or co-author of eight monographs, over 60 scientific articles and reviews, as well as many Polish translations of Old Russian texts (including The Novgorod First Chronicle). Her research interests include Church Slavonic literature (Ruthenian, Bulgarian and Serbian), the culture of Orthodox Slavs and the history of women in the Middle Ages.

  • dr Artur Modliński: head of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cybercommunication Research (CAICR) at the Faculty of Management, University of Lodz. In his research work, he focuses on interdisciplinary studies of human interactions with technology (among others, with cyborgs, bots and humanoids). He has added to modern science a description of such phenomena and constructs as techno-empowerment (increasing the decision-making autonomy of machines) or technoisation (a type of post-organisation in which people are responsible only for giving strategic directions to the structure).
  • dr hab. Łukasz Półtorak: assistant professor at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Lodz, where in 2021 he obtained the habilitation. Contractor or principal investigator in many research grants. His scientific interests include the electrochemistry of soft phase boundaries, e.g., the boundary formed between the water and oil film, which are used, inter alia, in the construction of chemical sensors for consumer quality control. He began his doctoral studies in 2012 at Lorraine University in Nancy, France. After three years, he transferred to the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

University of Lodz supports the research activity of its scientists through various initiatives. For example, last year went down in the history of the university as the one in which the largest number of international researchers were recruited at one time. This is thanks to the funds that the university obtained for participating in the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) competition. The University of Lodz uses the funds from the subsidy increased by 2% on implementing internal grant competitions. The funds constitute one of the most important tools for building research excellence at our university – they are used to finance research ideas of scientists and doctoral students from the University of Lodz. Thus, we create an international community of researchers who inspire each other, exchange experiences and knowledge.

In addition, meetings of the Rector of the University of Lodz, prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska with assistant professors and assistants were initiated. They are to help young employees of the University of Lodz build a path of scientific development.

At the University of Lodz, we are well aware of the importance of scientific and research activity. The University of Lodz Strategy states that "science is the continuous development of knowledge", and in our daily work we are supported by the values mentioned in it, such as: curiosity, courage, commitment, cooperation and respect.

On the occasion of the Polish Science Day, may all researchers of the University of Lodz cherish continuous enthusiasm and energy in exploring the world and further joy in their scientific journey!
