Prof. Marta Kolanowska from the Department of Geobotany and Plant Ecology, University of Lodz, has been involved in the taxonomy of orchids for many years. In order to describe their diversity, she has organised expeditions to the most exotic and least-explored regions of the world (primarily the Andean countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru). To date, she has described over 400 previously unknown orchid species.
The Museum of the City of Łódź will be displaying photos from her tropical expeditions, as well as the field equipment she uses during her expeditions soon.
The Museum of the City of Łódź has declared 2025 the Year of Łodzianki-Inicjatorki (Women of Lodz – Initiators), commemorating outstanding women associated with the city who, through their activities, have paved and continue to pave the way in culture, science, sports and social life.
